Featured Flickr Artists – 2. Gumbo

What up people!
Welcome to the second installment of the Featured Flickr Artists!
This week we look to a Bristol-based, heavy brick-hitter to serve us up with a hefty helping of space funk…..
Old Brizzol has a bubbling melting pot of Michelin-starred street art goodness, that I am sure will warrant many visits over the course of the Flickr features. But we begin with the stylistic stew of Gumbo…..
I always have a keen eye on Gumbo’s Flickr page-the man is always on point, painting regularly and always keeping it hella fresh. The man has raw style for days!!!!
I reached out to the Disco Duck through the mighty medium of Flickr, and got the throughly nice chap to give us a few words on where he’s from, and where he’s at right now…..
Gumbo: “I first put spraypaint to wall in 1997 – Hycote and Simoniz as I was a country boy and there were no legal walls or graffiti paint shops around. I had a couple of Graphotisms and beat up copies of Subway Art and Spraycan Art from friends for style guidance. I liked the funky stuff.

It wasn’t until I moved to Bristol in 2001 and hooked up with Shimz and AWOL that I really began to paint pieces. Along with Zare, who I knew from before. We would be painting most weekends, travelling the country and getting zooted. I owe these guys a lot.
Lately i’ve been going back to the future and painting what we call ’space funk’ style with Oath WHAT – astral traveling with Sun Ra and Futura 2000. I like to draw quick, paint quick and not get caught up in over producing the shit, keeping it loose.
Inspiration information – Spraycan Art, Nach MBA, Tes, Zare, 45 RPM, Nylon, Russ Rockwell, Aroe, Ponk, Matt Sewell, Devas, and Ami, Raek, Queg, TFP, FMK, TFW, Frank Zappa, Sun Ra, fIREHOSE, Kraftwerk, George Clinton. -Thanks.”
So-yeah, don’t hesitate to hit Gumbo’s Flickr up on the asap! You won’t be disappointed, the kid is fresher than a pack of Wrigleys Extra!
And of course many thanks to the style master general; Gumbo, for the flicks and taking the time to get back at us.
More Flickr radness next week.
Stay Fly!
