As always, many beverages were bodied whilst Dillatron 9000 hit us up with some classic cuts on the wheels of veal. The night finally concluded after some terrible pool playing (more squid than sharkin’) at Bunters, a heap of meal deals at Cleopatra’s grill and a night cap at Vertigo with a severely tipsy PG in tow.

What up! Sorry for my lack of posts recently, I’ve been crazy busy getting some stuff together for a mini solo show I am gonna sling up at the end of this month- I won’t get into the details of that right now-but don’t fret, I will keep y’all posted…..

I will get back on the posting game full throttle this week…….

Firstly I thought I would hit you all with a music related post, as I can’t remember the last time me or the kid Tripswitch dropped a hot link for yo lugholes.

Whilst I have been getting mad crafty this week I have been hitting up one of my favourite websites:

We Funk Radio

WEFUNK is a weekly radio mix-show, hosted and produced for more than a decade by Montreal DJs Professor Groove and DJ Static. Its been going since way back in ‘96 and serves up the finest in hip hop, funk & soul from old to new, classics, rare gems, new releases and more. You can tune in any time to their archive section and choose from over 500 two hour long shows – its flippin great for digging up those old favourites you had forgotten about. My necks near breaking point after a week of heavy head nodding.

On We Funk they also have a feature named ’sample moments’ where they highlight the original samples from well known hip hop tracks, which is great for nerding it up and impressing all your mates with your encyclopedic noggin.

And if you like that- you will bloomin love Who Sampled? An ace site where you can browse artists’ tracks to find out where the original samples came from. A brilliant creation which will solve many a heated discusion and head scratching session down the pub.

Recently i have been rocking Redman’s debut ‘Whut Thee Album’ from all the way back in ‘92. Its up on itunes now for about 5.99 (bargain).

I will leave you with a track from that album: ‘Tonights da Night’ feat. Hurricane G which takes the sample from Mary Jane Girls, ‘All Night Long’

Howdy Partners!

I have just finished putting some hot new artwork available for purchase in our online shop!!!

We have an awesome original piece from Texas based artist, Carlos Don Juan.

I stumbled across Carlos’ work whilst looking at some Fecal Face weekly competition submissions-his stuff is absolutely freakin awesome!

Be sure to check out his website to see some of the other amazing work he produces.

Here’s what Carlos has to say about his work……

‘The graffiti movement has been the biggest driving force behind my work since I am part of this growing art subculture. I approach and execute my work in almost the same manner that I would a piece of graffiti on a wall. The attitude that I have when I create a painting is similar to the one that I have when I am out painting the streets. My mentality is part ego, part adrenaline, part competitive, part street and always looking forward to the next project.
Mixed with the skills that I learned in the streets is the knowledge that I have gained in an academic setting. It’s binding painting’s traditional techniques with experimental forms of applying paint on a raw surface. Interweaving art history references with graffiti art’s history, which is still being made today. Creating a hybrid way of thinking made from art jargon and slang from the streets.
My paintings work as narratives that are greatly influenced by everyone from Michelangelo to Alice Neel to Twist to Revok. There are elements in these works that deal with personal influences such as Catholicism, Mexico, Oak Cliff, illegal immigration, politics and family. The portraits not only tell stories, but also document several cultures and movements that these individuals are a part of. Movements and cultures such as skateboarding, fixies, turntablelism, street wear, sneaker heads, graffiti and Hip Hop.’

Also in the Soup Gallery online store we have some additions from some Pastyland natives, including some limited edition prints from St Ives based Sam Bassett and a Tetraptych piece entitled ‘Little Bricks’ from Skinners sinking – Soup Gallery owner, Mr.Polglase.

Have a good weekend peeps-Till next week,

Oh, I almost forgot…….. Mad Thanks to everyone who showed out for the opening party, your support was much appreciated, as always!

Thanks to Skinners for supplying the keg and Dillatron for working the wheels of steel- Twas a flippin blast.

Unfortunately I only managed to take one measly photo very early on in the evening of Dale rocking his ‘I Heart Kernow T’ on the decks. Then the battery ran out on the camera and Betty Stoggs got the best of me. I am lame. Sorry.

Howdy peeps,
Sorry I have failed to get photos of the Autumnal exhibition up online yet. Been a bit ill this week, so have been out of the shop for a few days. But I am back at TSG towers now and gradually getting up to speed again.
The prints will hopefully be up in the online store by the end of the day.
In the meantime- I have just added an awesome booklet produced by recent FCA graduate Lizzie Frost entitled, ‘You’re not from round here are you?’

In the meantime- I have just added an awesome booklet produced by recent FCA graduate Lizzie Frost entitled, ‘You’re not from round here are you?’

This brilliantly funny booklet is an editorial piece, designed as a guide for people visiting or moving to Cornwall for the first time, in order to prepare them for certain Cornish eccentricities. It covers topics including Cornish independence, slang, climate, transport and seagulls.

It’s an ace little book well worth a look whether you be an emmet or Cornish through and through!

Check it out in our online store!

Another day closer to the opening of ‘Autmnal’, another artist to profile!

Today it’s the turn of mega talented Mr. McCarthy, who after traveling the globe beautifying many a clump of bricks has finally settled in Qatar.

Me and Dale go way back, he’s is the first person I painted a wall with many many moons ago. Give the kid a pen, pencil or paint and he will dish up something hella slick- hell, give him some macaroni, some glue and a bag of glitter and he wouldn’t disappoint.

I have plenty of hilarious stories I could divulge about ol’ McCarthy, but we’ll save them for another time- Here’s a little bio on the jazzy so and so….

‘Dale McCarthy was born in South Africa in 1981, he currently lives and
works as an advertising Art Director in Qatar, a tiny peninsula in the
Middle East.

A modern day Jack of all trades, His talent spans across the visual
spectrum from filthy street style graffiti, photography, illustration,
animation, to polished digital artworking.

He thinks that mad stuff and shit on walls is the best thing since
sliced pitta bread.

He loves you, no matter who you are or what you do because he kind of
thinks that we are all one and the same.

His best friend is a set of bongos and an ipod stocked with dutty
reggae and old school hip hop.

Thats about it.’

You can check out more of Dale’s work on his Flickr, and on Doha Magazine on adabisc.com

I especially recommend checking out the new series he is working on, entitled Planet Doha.

A project that sees Dale trying to hone his TV presenter skills whilst attempting to experience all the diverse cultures of the world without ever leaving Qatars capital city of Doha.

Eat you heart out Palin!

What What!
Following on from yesterdays profile of David Shrillinglaw, today we are showcasing the superb talents of another two artists involved in our forthcoming exhibition, ‘Autumnal’ .
Ladies and Gentleman, Alex Higlett and Georgina Hounsome….

Alex studied illustration at Bath Spa university and is currently working freelance. She mainly produces work through drawing, painting and printmaking, but I also likes to make things and publish zines.

Her work is narrative based and focusses on people; interesting characters and their stories and backgrounds.
